previous edition I've done a dozen of translations. It's not
enough for star letter. However the clients return with new jobs
and thank me for collaboration. I'm busy with such a job now.

Things are going great, I've got as much work as I can handle,
staying afloat financially, developing long-term professional
relationships, I'm off to Chicago to meet one of them next month,
and I'm still hearing for the first time from outfits I contacted

Thanks for the update, stay in touch!

Dear Alex,

Thank you for your tranmail information.

I can tell you that I have been sending my resume and background info to
some of the agencies of your database. And I am pleased to say that in some
cases I received very good replies, inviting me to take sample tests (which
I find a controversial issue though), or including me in their database for
future projects and in 2 or 3 cases I was assigned jobs. :-)!!

Therefore I am happy with the results even though they are not enough. But I
understand that it will take some time (a year now since I started sending
my CV).

I also found your e-book very useful, where I could confirm certain
practices I already had, change others, learned quite a few tips and
understand our business better.

Thank you again for sharing.

Well Alex, I finally succumbed and bought the tranmail list!

I started by sending emails only to those agencies in France, where I live and work. Things had got rather quiet after two months of maternity leave. After two days, I have had to stop - the response has been overwhelming. And that's coming from a sceptic who was prepared to be "underwhelmed"!

And there was I thinking I could take a Halloween break...

Alex, hi:

Just wanted to share my results:
I targeted the same 800+ some agencies, I guess, like you did, the ones
located in UK, USA and Canada.

I did write to each agency individually, and although I was not able to
reach your response rate (maybe, because I did not ask them to respond in
any case), but I did get about 140 replies over 2 weeks' period, most of
them were given within 2-3 days' time.

Needless to say, I already received one job that more than covered my
expenses and time spent on this project. I have been doing the same thing
every year for the past several years (with Glenn's guide, Karin's database,
my own research), and this is quite normal: out of about a 1000 letters
sent, I usually get about 10-20 small to medium orders right away (within
the next 2 weeks to 2 months), and 3 to 4 good permanent clients a year.

Once again, thank you for you list.

Sincerely,
Andrey Bondarenko

Inspired by the book I ordered the tranmail product a few weeks later.

I was very pleased with the response to my applications( I re- wrote my resume, designed a fabulous marketing letter and sent request for free-lance work to all of the American and Canadian companies( I' m located in Vancouver) listed in tranmail.

The response was overwhelming- I spent about six hours one day just sending out letters and almost instantly getting feedback. The response of the Americans was almost 40 %, while the Canadians were somewhat less enthusiastic, about 2%.

Four companies were seriously interested in my specialties and actually promised to send me some work soon.(As it always happens, I am completely booked right now, but who knows- those days waiting by the fax machine might soon come along..)

All of the responses were extremely polite ( but then, my letter was simpy irresistable;)!

Thanks for compiling a great book and an excellent list.

Now I have no time again to continue my mailing campaign because I have too much work to do. Also I am able to say "**** off!" to those who send me tests. (I am sure almost all (only almost) tests sucks due to lack of reference material, in- house terminology/professional slang and "Pray who are the judges" factor.

Here are my syggestions for topics to be discussed in your excellent e-zine...

1. General attitude to tests. 2. A comparative brief review of different TM tools (I noticed that you become kinder to them!). This review will enable a translator to choose the right TM (Trados, IBM, DejaVu, SDL) for his/her specific needs.

Dear Alex,

Thanks for the new addresses!

You would not believe the response I have received! I am struggling to finnish my last couple of months as a student and therefore had to stop writing to the agencies on you list after about 200.

I expected tings to start happening in about 3-6 months, but getting loads of application forms to fill out, test translations and even payed assignments within the first couple of weeks made me realize how effective this list is.

A little bit too effective, since I want to get my MA of Arts in June. Anyway, it's been worth every penny and my dream is about to come true: to work as a translator on a freelance basis!

I wish you all the best for the future,
Kristina Luoma

I just started doing freelance translation about 7 months ago. I bought your list of agencies, as well as another one. In all, I sent out my cover letter and resume to about 600 agencies by email. I did receive lots of replies.

Most were just "we've added you to our database" replies. I did get some positive ones, and have done several projects for about 5 agencies now. In fact, I recently completed one for which I earned $2000 in just four days. I was very impressed with that one. I finished it a day early, and I try to get all my jobs done at least somewhat early.
