Useful Tip for CD-ROM Backup

This is a follow up to the article on backing up in issue 21.

From: Peter Stumpf
Subject: CDs read-only attribute - no problem

"Hi Alex,

just read the newest tranfree and I got a hint for you and all the millions that hate the way a certain company makes life hard for us...

"Now I use a CD-RW device, which does the job OK. The downside is that it stores all the files as "read-only", so when you copy them back across, you have to reset the file attributes so you can edit the files. "

There is no downside. Just do something smart. Don't use XX products when it come to file handling!

The freeware file manager 'Servant Salamander' resets the CD read-only attributes automatically during file transfer (as an option). This is a very valuable function - you do not have to spent any of your time even thinking about it (time is money . You will only realize that the read-only attribute is a pain in the neck when you can't use the Servant.

Some short info about the Servant Salamander. It emulates the good old Norton Commander, NC shortcuts work. It is a full- fledged Windows program, networking (with a server or p2p) is a gas.

Several compression plug-ins are included. File search is very fast - just try it. As mentioned before it is freeware. Although it says beta (1.6 beta 6) it is more reliable than most of the programs I have to use (and that cost me a lot for their bugs.) Go to www.altap.cz

We are not affiliated with ALTAP. But we have been using the Servant Salamander for more than a year now (on a bunch of workstations and laptops) and in our daily work it saved us a lot of hassle and time. It beats the sad explorer every time when it comes to efficient work. Give it a try and tell me what you think about it (e.g. when handling your CDs ))

Have fun while working!

Regards, Peter.
