Let's Have Some Fun At Work!

by Phil Naylor

Have you had a look at the translatortips® forums yet? I ask because as well as being safe and respectful communities of translators discussing a wide range of business issues, they are also a lot of FUN!

For instance, there is a large range of smilies you can use in your posts - not just the ordinary e-mail ones using keyboard characters, but animated characters that...

  • bounce up and down
  • grin and wink at you
  • and even one that rolls about laughing!

They make it so much easier to express yourself fully, which can be difficult in text-based conversations.

As business development manager at translatortips.com, I've set myself the task of developing the fun side of business. So much of the business world is very serious, and this is of course quite necessary a lot of the time. However, I am a great believer in the therapy of laughter.

When you're busy, it's very easy to say...

"I don't have time for fun just now..."

I think that's the MOST important time to have some fun. Having a laugh or raising a smile makes you feel lighter, makes you feel excited.

Your mind becomes more lively too and your motivation levels go up, which makes a few of those jobs that little easier to do. I'm convinced that a little time spent having fun in the working week is paid back over and again with increased productivity and relief of stress.

They'll help you AND they're fun!

I also found that Richard Lederer is someone else who appreciates the fun side of language...

And of course, see my personal favourite on the main page - the tranfree Translation Joke.

Have fun!
