A Practical Guide to Software LocalizationBy Bert Esselink Review by Alex Eames Those of you who caught the last four editions of tranfree will already have read a sample of Bert's writing. I let that speak for itself. There are few books available on the subject and Bert's is the best I have come across. He has taken a very complicated subject and broken it up into digestible slices. There are lots of screen-shots and references to useful web sites - and updated information is also available via the publisher's website. Bert has also sent me a few pre-publication chapters of the next edition - in progress - which will be published in the latter half of this year. I can tell you that the second edition will be even better than the first, and is written more with the translator in mind. I feel that getting into software localization is one of the best ways to make yourself recession-proof into the next decade and beyond. You will hear me say this again and again because it is so obviously true! People are buying more and more computers and using more and more software. Not only this, but the translation of online web content is going to be huge - it's already started! You only need one or two clients with large web sites - with content updated daily - and you will have an income for life. Bert's book is a MUST READ if you want to get into this fast growing and very exciting field. Get into it now before the others wake up and you've got too much competition! A Practical Guide to Software Localization is available from www.Amazon.com or www.Amazon.co.uk I strongly recomend you read it if this field interests you at all.

New UK Union Being Formed for Translators and InterpretersNUIT - National Union of Interpreters and Translators - UK A tranfree reader told me about this and I spoke to Mr Elfitoury. It is to be a fully-fledged trade union for interpreters and translators in the UK. It is at the very early stages, so I have no idea how successful it will be in its aims - which are basically to improve the working conditions and situation for interpreters and translators. They offered me a position on the committee, but I had to decline because I've go far too much on already. NUIT will not get involved in the regulation of translation and interpreting quality standards like the other existing professional associations. It will be much more focused on the welfare of the members. If you want to be involved, you should go to the general meeting, which is set for 31st of May this year at 18:30 at MSF 40 Bermondsey Street, London SE1 3UN nr London Bridge Station. Meeting is estimated to last 2 hours. For further information, please call...

Translation Joke Of The MonthWhen Gerber started selling baby food in Africa, they used the same packaging as in the US, with the smiling baby on the label. Later they learned that in Africa, companies routinely put pictures on the labels of what's inside, since many local people can't read.
