tranfree issue 6 - 19 September 1999 Hot Topic - Translation Job listing services - 3 New and 1 DeadXJ closed downYou may have heard already, but unfortunately the XJ list, run by Adam Rice, closed down in August. It was taking up much of Adam's time and resources and the "shareware" concept did not work out. This is a real shame because it was a popular list (over 2500 members). For newer subscribers, tranfree 4 and tranfree 4 supplement both contained reviews of sources of online work - you may wish to check out the archive
ProZ.com http://www.ProZ.comProZ.com was launched just two weeks ago and already has more than 800 translators and agencies registered. They are a free service helping agencies, freelancers and clients to meet. The site is quite easy to use and understand, and registration and creating your own profile are quick. As a freelancer, you register, create a profile and specify your language pairs. When jobs are posted in your pairs, they will be forwarded to you. You can contact the client directly. So it's like the XJ list was, but with filtering. According to Henry, the owner: "We don't share any personal information with anyone else, and what's more, we protect it from misuse. While people can email you directly, they won't have access to your personal information unless you give it to them. NOBODY else in the field is doing so much to protect privacy. We won't be taking commissions, as we believe that direct communication between translators, agencies and outsourcers makes for the quickest, highest quality translations." I think this looks like a venture that will be good for translators. Why not check it out?
Miguel Contreras' Mailing ListMiguel produces a weekly list of translating and interpreting jobs that is sent out on Monday mornings. I don't know much more about Miguel's list because I haven't received his info yet and I couldn't find anything on the web about it. For now, if you are interested you could send an email to miguelcontreras@prodigy.net and ask him about it directly. If I find out anything more I will let you know in a future edition.
MyConduit.com [no longer exists Jan 2001]Another new job forum is MyConduit.com. In their email they claimed to be "the world's largest Web-based translation services marketplace" as well as "a brand new Web-based service that enables professional translators and agencies to find more available translation projects". I thought this was a bit of a contradiction unless they've just bought Aquarius (and Yuri hasn't told me that they have). I wrote and told the owner, but, guess what - NO REPLY. So, there are three new job listing service out there, but I struck out on getting further information on two. I hope to have more news for you next month!
