"First of all, I want to thank you for all of your helpful ideas - the whole tone of your website is exeptionally helpful and caring. I also think that your book "How to Earn $80,000+ per Year..." is one of the best things happened in the world of translation business. I would not have learned of many useful things otherwise." Svetlana Rachkovskaya lana80@earthlink.net 2 April 2000 "Hello, Alex! Sorry I haven't been in touch for quite a long time. Reason is when I received your book (How to Earn $80,000+ per year...) I redesigned my résumé and sent out about 270 copies of it and ever since, I have been blasted by incoming contracts!!! Business is so good, that if it keeps on coming the way it is, I will make more than $80,000 in my first year of using your method. In fact, it will be well over $100,000! Of course, I do work a lot, even evenings and weekends, but I believe it is worth it all. I guess you should rename your book to: $100,000/year... It would be more like it." Réal Berthiaume Freelance Translator Gesber International April 1999 "Hello, Alex! Just a brief note to say that I enjoyed reading your book How to Earn $80,000+ Per Year as a Freelance Translator and found it very helpful, even though I've been translating for 25 years. Keep up the great work." Carol C. Macomber The French Connection "Are you so flooded with translation work that you never have a dry spell? Are you already the #1 choice for hundreds of clients fighting daily for your services? Then you don't need this book! The rest of us, both novices and veterans, will all find useful advice about how to build up our translation businesses in the cyberage. With good humour and plain English, Alex shows us the perspective from both the translator's side and the agency side. And knowledge in this case is definitely power: If you know what clients want, you have a better chance of convincing them you can provide it. To help readers practice what he preaches, Alex provides a free list of 220 agency e-mail contacts he has culled from the Web -- certainly worth the price of the book." Cathy Flick The Translation Journal - Web Surfing for Fun and Profit Scientific translator since 1978 "Dear Alex, I've now finished reading How to Earn £50,000+ Per Year as a Freelance Translator and have found it to be very interesting indeed. I'm sure that any 'budding linguist' will find it a very useful tool/guide to setting themselves up in their own business. There's also many 'established' translators I know of that ought to read this as well! I found it very 'punchy', easy and straightforward to read, which I feel is very important when you compare it to some of the publications and training manuals that I've read in the past. Having a 'No Nonsense' attitude towards the reader means that the interest is held and it doesn't drone on and become just another 'instruction manual'. I can liken it to 'listening to good advice from a good friend over a drink!!'" Mike Taylor Director of Translation Choice Language Services "An excellent 'How To' book for all translators, both new and already established. If only all freelance translators worked this way! All our lives would be easier. And we'd have more time to spend chasing clients for work to give to translators. I strongly recommend that all freelance translators read this book and take heed of its sensible, well thought-out advice." Siân Marlow Head of Translation UPS Translations - London "Thank you for the book, I found it contained much very useful information, being an experienced translator but one completely unfamilair with the "marketplace". I am now working on following up various of your suggestions. All of my translation work to date has come through professional contacts and I am only now beginning to seek out other sources." Good service and standard do win out, although so many still try to beat down price and to hell with quality. In the past year I now find clients/agencies contacting me and this normally means they are serious and remain regular clients. I graduated 5 years ago and since then I have been working as a freelance translator, although my main source of income wasn't translation but English classes. I've been meaning to e-mail you my tons of gratitude, but I've been so busy answering e-mails, that I just haven't had the time! I must say that when I first ordered your "Earn $80,000...," I did so with much skepticism since I had already spent quite a fortune on "other" freelance-work-at-home-opportunities that turned out to be...well...a major disappointment, putting it mildly! I found the products I received from you to be professional, concise, and on target, and the suggestions extremely easy to implement. Guess what? I, too, achieved a response rate in excess of 20% from my e-mail campaign! Unbelievable (and, I can say that since I'm in the market research business!!!). While I would hesitate to venture into online translating at the moment, I can still make good use of your tips, tactics, tricks and techniques in my part-time work from home. As you may know, here in Venezuela the money isn't in translation work; it's in giving private English classes. But now that I've got your book, I can look at the business from a different angle, and if I can put even a few of your suggestions into practice, I'm sure that quite soon I could come out ahead. I read your query in Lantra about translatortips and Alex Eames. About a year ago, there was a long discussion in sci.lang.translation about Alex's book and the bottom line seemed to be it was a very good book but a lot of people didn't like the title. I didn't either but nothing that generates such debate can be bad...in the sense that the more something is talked about the more people will be curious:-) When I finally read the book, I had made 5K for the first time in a month. I couldn't understand why I was doing so well being new in the block. When I read the book, I understood. All the principles I had followed by instinct are there. Even the figure in the cover of the book is conservative (I never went below that figure except for one month in the past year, so if you multiply it by eleven or twelve...) A bit of luck -being at the right place at the right time kind of thing - and the right marketing decisions was what established the difference. Interestingly enough, I was telling someone I may start doing consultancy since I get about four phone calls a week on average from people who want to know how to get started and I am fed up of giving my time away for free... Alex is a person like you and me who decided to put to paper what had worked for him. The book is a lot of common-sense, obvious tips -obvious once you know them... My opinion of Alex is that he is selling a good product (can't tell you how the tranmail list works, never tried it) and, like a lot of other people, trying to make a buck on the Net...but he is doing it the hard way, by investing a lot of hard work into his site and his products. I wonder if you know something I don't, since your message was not very friendly towards Alex...has he done anything that annoyed you, or is there another reason for the snide remarks? Just curious...
