Some people are suspicious of cookies as an invasion of privacy. Cookies are only used at translatortips in order to ensure that our affiliates get paid their commission for bringing new people to the site (that's only fair after all!)
A cookie is a small text file which is used to store a small amount of information locally on your computer. In order to set up and run our new affiliate program it was necessary to do this. But do not worry there is no way to get virus from a cookie because it is only a tiny text file. The CompuServe homepage puts 6 cookies on your computer every time you log in if you are a CompuServe member.
Responsible users of cookies keep them to the minimum possible size, use as few as possible and have them expire (and get automatically deleted) within the minimum appropriate timescale. Our affiliate program is set up so that cookies expire after 90 days.
The two translatortips cookies are only able to be read from the translatortips site and by you on your hard disk. Other sites cannot use the information in translatortips cookies to "spy" on you.
If you come to the translatortips site from http://www.almal.demon.co.uk/agserve.htm that site is affiliate number 103.
If you have a PC, the affiliate cookie stored on your computer will be in the folder:
C:\WINDOWS\Cookies and will be called yourname@translatortips.txt
it looks something like this:
banner#103#translatortips.com#0#2598665088#29322672#3051659168#29304567#*
It is a text file and can not be used in any way to harm you or your computer (people worry about viruses and things - there is no need with cookies!)
I use one other cookie which helps me to track which banner advertisements are effective. This one lives at:
C:\WINDOWS\Cookies and will be called yourname@cgi_www_translatortips.txt
It looks something like this:
banner_image#a1.gif#cgi.www.translatortips.com#0#3043132672#29304768#410159168#29304567#*
I don't know exactly what the numbers mean, but the first three bits in each cookie describe:
That's really all there is to it with regard to cookies!
